My philosophy of education views educators as facilitators of learning in both content-related areas and in matters of life. I do not view an educator as someone that stands in front of a classroom telling students what they should know. Anyone can tell someone about something. My view of a teacher is someone that gives students access to learning situations and gives the student some control over their learning. This could be as simple as a student deciding how many problems they should solve before moving on to new content or which activities to complete for an assignment. When students take this kind of ownership for their learning, they will feel more responsible and take more pride in their education. Students spend many hours at school. They are there for classes, athletic practices, athletic games, meetings, and any number of other activities. Once students enter the public education system, they are likely to spend more time at school than at home with their family. Educators should view their roles as more than just instructors of knowledge, but they should also see themselves as someone to guide their students in good character and morals. Educators are encouragers. We are also helping develop citizens capable of contributing to society. This makes being an educator both an important and rewarding career.
